Which areas of the body are most likely to rust?

Here are some of the more common locations for rust:

  • Rear window. This is #1 flaw in 60's cars body design. The first place to look for an initial impression on hardtops, look for rust and boils in paint in the lower corners. Also look/feel inside trunk along window lip. Vinyl tops are dangerous. Look for boils along bottom of chrome trim all the way around the back. Rust loves the area along the c-pillar. Push around on the vinyl top listening for the crunch of rust "bubbles". Look in the trunk for water-holes in the window lip.

  • Trunk pan. Especially if the window/trunk-weather-stripping has been breached.

  • Bottom rear of front quarter panels. Especially on under side around the large mounting bolt.

  • Rear wheel wells around the lip. Especially in front and behind the wheel on the bottom of the rear quarter panels.

  • Front lower valence panels, the joints between the lower valence, and the lower corner panels and the front fenders. Sometimes hard to see from the outside.

  • Side window drip rails. The putty cracks, water gets in, and rust eats away at the rail/roof joint line (especially on vinyl tops).

  • In the cowl. Leaves from the trees hold water = rust.

Why was the color called "Hugger Orange"?

It started for the 1969 model. It was the marketing nickname for the '69 Camaro, appearing in magazine ads and commercials. It was in reference to the cars handling characteristics (i.e. hugs corners... the hugger!), which is needy by today's standards, but for the sixties, it was one of the best handling American cars you could buy. GM made a big deal about the hugger thing, and offered special color combos with hugger orange paint, rally stripes (Z28 style), orange and houndstooth interior. Of course the '69 indy pacecar had hugger orange stripes.
